AAPC (Known as American Academy of Professional Coders) offers three levels of certifications that include the Coding Certification, CPC, and Designation. The coders who are looking for certification may choose or pick among the three levels. Medical coders who are working in a physician’s office can have the credential (CPC). It is also for the medical coders who provide training on medical terminology that is essential for coding (procedures, actual claims as well as reimbursements). The exam (CPC) failed candidates may focus on regular practice and preparation and brush up frail knowledge areas before the test (retaking).
•150 multiple-choice questions are included in the CPC exam. And you will get 5 hours and 40 minutes to complete exam, a good point to know is that it is an open code book exam. There are three different sections in the exam and you will have to score a minimum 70 percent on each section that is the pass mark of the exam. You will be marked fail if you can not earn 70 percent marks or better on any of the three sections. You should study the approved manuals for use during the exam. As coding numbers are updated every January, you should use the current testing year’s version of these books.
•According to the suggestion of the AAPC, you should take a medical terminology and anatomy course before you sign up in an online CPC preparation course or that is taught in a classroom setting. Training in basic coding is provided in this preparation course. For the current year of the exam candidates should buy the Official CPC Certification Study Guide. The guide includes coding for each body system, reviews on terminology and test-taking tactics to maximize the chances of success on the exam. Taking the advantage review (CPC) classed that are offered by the AAPC (local chapters) you can gauge about your preparation by participating online practice exams.
You can buy the required manuals. To get familiar with how they are organized you can use open-book on the exam. Using flash cards for medical words that you feel difficult to remember is another technique. Take practice exam and go to AAPC review session. All of these will help you to become familiar with CPC exam and eventually get a high medical transcriptionist salary.
•A fail score will be given to you if you fail to achieve 70 percent marks on all the three sections individually. You will have a chance to retake the exam at no cost within a 12 month period. To obtain a testing date you will have to sign up again without paying any testing fees. Failing the retest you will have to continue the process all over again, that means paying the appropriate fees you will have to register for the exam again. You are allowed to take the test as many times as you need to have a passing score but not more than twice per year.
•For your retest, at first review the feedback that is given you by the examination results. Areas of study for all candidates who did not pass the exam are provided by the AAPC. Going back to your preparation material, practice on your weaker subjects.
